Dog ate over 100 pebbles
Emergency surgery saved dog's life

A chocolate labrador swallowed over 100 pebbles during a trip to the beach, and had to be rushed for surgery.

The three-year-old dog, named Barney, started vomiting pebbles shortly after he got home from the beach. His owner, Kim Woollard, took him straight to animal hospital where x-rays showed Barney had a stomach-full of pebbles.

Barney had surgery to remove the 90 pebbles that were still inside him shortly afterwards and is now making a good recovery.

Kim said: "Barney has been to the beach several times before and loves it. It wasn't obvious while we were playing that he was eating so many pebbles."

Roger Bralow, a vet at Stone Lion Veterinary Hospital where Barney was treated, said: "While it's normal for dogs on the beach to scavenge and, in so doing, swallow a few pebbles, the sheer volume he consumed is unusual and had the potential to cause him serious internal injuries."

Kim added: "[I] will be keeping a close eye on him next time we go to the beach."
