A vet nurse's diary: Cat castrates and scatty ferrets

On admissions this morning. First I admitted a seven-month-old dsh cat for a spay. All her checks were ok so I admitted her to the kennels for her pre-med.

Next I admitted a six-month-old dsh cat for a castrate. He was so sweet and purred constantly!

All the other admissions had been completed by the other nurses so I headed down into theatre. We had a lot of cats booked in to be neutered this morning so we set up for these to be done first.

The first two castrates were both young dsh cats and the ops went smoothly. Next was a cat spay - the first one I had admitted this morning. She was a bit wriggly when we tried to induce but she was soon under the GA. Her op also went well so I then set up for two ferret vasectomies.

The first ferret was very smelly and hadn't been handled very much so it was really scatty! Soon it was under the GA and I clipped and scrubbed the surgical site ready for the vet. All went well and the ferret was soon awake and recovering.

Then I set up for the next vasectomy - the brother of the other ferret. He was just the same as the other one - very scatty! He was a bit more difficult to anaesthetise as he was so wriggly! The op went well though and he was recovering well too.

After that, there was only one more op to do which was another cat castrate. He was a seven-month-old, dsh cat with a lovely temperament - he kept wanting cuddles. His castration went well too.

All the ops had been completed so me and the other nurses cleaned and tidied theatre, cleaned all the kits and re-sterilised them.
