Anaesthesia Updates for Nurses

Course Outline:
As a veterinary nurse in general or small animal practice, the monitoring and care of anaesthetised patients will form a significant proportion of your daily work. The best anaesthetic monitor is the person monitoring the patient – that means you! As awareness increases about the potential risks of small animal anaesthesia, and owner expectations about the care of their pets becomes ever higher, your role becomes even more important. This course will help you to develop your knowledge and kills in this vital area, so that you can carry out this responsible role effectively and competently, keeping your stress levels in theatre to a minimum.

What you’ll learn:

  • How to choose a breathing system
  • Monitoring anaesthesia: How can you prevent things from going wrong? What can you do when things do go wrong?
  • Pain assessment: Which drugs are used
  • Intravenous access and fluid therapy
  • Perioperative care – comfort and safety for patients

Tutor:
Elizabeth Leece BVSc, DipECVA, CertVA, MRCVS
