Linda Roberts the first UK veterinary nurse to receive specialist qualification

Veterinary nurse Linda Roberts, of the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies (R(D)SVS) is the first in the UK to receive an internationally recognised qualification in oncology.

Based at the School's £3 Veterinary Cancer Care Centre, she received the qualification from the Academy of Internal Medicine for Veterinary Technicians after completing 6,000 hours of specialist oncology work in a three year period.

The Veterinary Technician Speciality in Oncology qualification is accredited by the American Veterinary Association. There is no equivalent qualification available in Britain, and it is highly competitive. A total of 75 cases must be submitted and passed before candidates are able to sit the exam.

Miss Roberts travelled to the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine congress in Montreal to take the exam. Studies included chemotherapy, anaesthesia and analgesia, medical and radiation oncology, and advanced diagnostic and therapeutic techniques.

Discussing her achievement Linda said: "I am delighted to have achieved this. It was a lot of hard work but well worth it and will certainly help in my role as a cancer nurse at the School's new Veterinary Cancer Care Centre, having covered a range of issues from looking at treatments to communicating with clients at what can often be a very emotional time."

Miss Roberts qualified as a veterinary nurse in 2002 whilst working in general practice in the New Forest. She spent some time as a medicine/intensive care nurse at the Royal Veterinary College, before joining Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies in 2004.
