Contender for world's loudest purring cat
Cat's purr reaches more than 100 decibels

A 12-year-old rescue cat may be crowned with the loudest purr in the world by the Guinness Book of World Records.

Merlin is able to purr louder than 100 decibels, making him as loud as a pneumatic drill and as loud as a passing tube train.

His owner, 47-year-old Tracy Westwood from Devon, said he's always been loud.

"We've never really thought anything of his purr until we noticed obviously the [current] Guinness World Record holder, and all my friends and family urged me to get him into the world record book," she said. "So my New Year's resolution this year was to see if he is actually a Guinness World Record breaker."

Merlin, who purrs four times louder than the average cat, also lives with dogs - one of which is completely deaf.

"Maybe Merlin's purred him deaf," laughed Tracy.

But while his family have learned to live with the noise, it seems he causes some confusion to outsiders.

"When I'm on the phone I often have people asking me what on Earth is the noise in the background," said Tracy, to which she replies: "It's just Merlin the cat."

The current official world record holder is Northamptonshire cat Smokey, who purrs to 92 decibels.
