UK's unwanted cat crisis continues
Pleas after latest Cats Protection and RSPCA data

Figures released by Cats Protection show that for every one person enquiring a about adopting a cat, there are 10 people calling to give up a cat or report a stray.

The data, which came from the charity's national helpline, have lead to an emergency plea for people to come forward and offer a cat a home. It says that the ratio has significantly risen since 2009, when it was just one to three.

The figures were released after the RSPCA said yesterday (31 October) that they have seen a 65 per cent increase in the animals abandoned over the last five years.

Cats Protection said that between July and September this year adoption inquiries had fallen by 55 per cent and reports of cats needing homes had risen by 34 per cent, compared to the same period in 2009.

This data does not include calls to the charity's 260 volunteer-run branches, which carry out 75 per cent of the organisation's work.

A spokesperson for Cats Protection, Kate Bunting, said: "Since the UK entered recession we have received many more requests from people to take in their cats, with owners saying they are losing their jobs, their homes, or moving into rented accommodation.

“We currently have around 6,200 cats in care, with many more in need of help, so we desperately need people to come forward to adopt a cat.

"We would also urge people to get their cats neutered as soon as possible because it is the most effective way of controlling numbers of unwanted cats and kittens."
