Cockatoo hatches after parents smuggled into UK

Baby red-tailed black cockatoo hatched

A red-tailed black cockatoo has hatched at an animal park in Cornwall, after its parents were smuggled into the UK from Australia as eggs.

The chick hatched in an incubator at Paradise Park, Hayle, because its parents had broken their other eggs, therefore not succeeding in having chicks until now.

The cockatoo's parents were illegally brought to the UK unhatched, while hidden in a specially made vest. The vet responsible has since been jailed for eight years for animal offences.

Park Curator David Woolcock said: "The little chick is very active and its long, fluffy, yellow feathers make it very endearing."

The chick will eventually be black with red tail feathers like its parents and will grow to be between 55cm (21in) and 63cm (24in).

Red-tailed black cockatoos can live for more than 100 years.
