Westminster Dog of the Year announced
MP's dog fights off strong competition for title

A four-year-old Norfolk terrier called Star has been named Westminster's Dog of the Year.

The competition, which allows UK MPs to show off their canine companions, is now in its 20th year. The event is organised by Dogs Trust and Kennel Club (KC), and this year involved a new race called doggy dash.

The judging panel comprised Dogs Trust CEO Clarissa Baldwin, KC secretary Caroline Kisko, and last year's winner Wiberforce with his owner MP Neil Parish.

Star's owner Charlie Elphicke, MP for Dover and Deal, said: "Star and I are shocked, delighted and amazed to be crowned this year's Westminster Dog of the Year. She truly lived up to her name today and it couldn't have happened to a friendlier dog.

"Star has been joining me in my campaign to stamp out puppy farming in Europe. We want to stop people abusing the current pet passport system and put an end to ill puppies coming through Dover to be sold in the UK."

MP David Burrowes' labrador Cholmeley was competition runner-up, and MP Lindsay Hoyle's Rottweiler Gordon came in third place.
