Eye operation saves elephant's sight

African elephant recovering with clearer vision

Thanks to an operation by vet surgeons at Paignton Zoo in Devon, an African elephant named Duchess is still able to see.

42-year-old Duchess had to have her right eye removed in 2011 due to glaucoma, and more recently sight in her left eye was limited due to cataracts.

Vet surgeons decided to operate on the four-tonne animal, which is the only elephant at the zoo, in order to save her sight.

Consultant ophthalmologist, Jim Carter, said: "[Duchess] is doing very well, with no active inflammation and with vision already significantly better than prior to surgery.

"She is on a reducing dose of medication. I'm very pleased with her overall progress."

Matthew Webb, senior head keeper of mammals, said: "She is in very high spirits and is enjoying being able to reach for naturally growing food around her enclosure, which previously she could not."
