Tiger has full health-check
Sumatran tiger all set to move zoos

A Sumatran tiger from ZSL London Zoo has undergone health checks ahead of her move to the Wildlife Heritage Foundation in Smarden, Kent, this weekend.

17-year-old Raika has been trained to lean against the wall of her enclosure so she can be anaesthetised with a handheld injection and avoid the stress of a tranquilliser dart.

The medical examination took place within the tiger enclosure rather than the veterinary hospital to save difficulties moving her, as Raika weighs 105 kilo (16.5 stone).

The health check involved taking blood samples and examining Raika's eyes, ears, teeth, chest and abdomen. The tiger, which has lived at London Zoo since 1997, passed all of her checks and was deemed fit and healthy.

ZSL Veterinary Officer,
Taina Strike, who examined Raika, said: "Every animal, big or small, must undergo a full health examination before moving between zoos to ensure that they are in good health and fit to travel.

"I checked Raika from teeth to tail and gave her a thorough once-over so that she'll arrive at her new home in tip-top condition. Raika is a model patient… and she was blissfully unaware of the whole procedure when she woke up."
