Police dog works single-pawed
There's only one crime-fighter left in town

A drug-sniffer dog named Nikka is the only certified member left on the police force in a small town called Vaughn, New Mexico.

It follows the resignation of the final human officer of the force, Police Chief, Ernest "Chris" Armijo. It is believed that he faces charges after reports that he is not allowed to carry a gun due to his political background.

Last year, the only other officer of the town, pleaded guilty to charges of assault, ceasing his certification to make arrests and carry firearms.

Paw-enforcer Nikka is yet to make an appearance since the resignation became public, though it is thought that she lives with Armijo, who has an aptly marked truck in his driveway saying "K-9".

However, residents of Vaughn, which has a population of about 450 people, seem far from concerned about the situation.

Town resident, Joyce Tabor, said: "There's just a whole lot of nothing going on here. We have very little crime, it's quiet, so this really doesn't matter."
