Crime-spree cat

Neighbourhood thief is two-year-old Denis the cat

A cat has been nicknamed Denis the Menace by his neighbours following 18-months of stealing objects from their gardens.

Two-year-old Denis, from Bedfordshire, has managed to bring home two full boxes worth of strange items to his embarrassed owner, Lesley Newman.

The stolen items include underwear, a football, towels and car sponges. Mrs Newman keeps every item he brings home, in case neighbours come looking for their property. She says luckily so far no one has been angry.

Denis came from a rescue shelter originally, and began his crime-spree at six months old, when he first moved in with Mrs Newman. She decided to instal CCTV cameras to help catch the cat red-pawed, and the videos have now made Denis an internet sensation.

She said: "He either leaves things in the front room or brings them up to me in bed. He will come up to my side of the bed and scream until I acknowledge what he has brought in. It's like 'Hello, I've brought you a present'."

The cat has also inspired a new range of t-shirts that read "Denis stole my pants", and profits will go to Homeless Cat Rescue Bedfordshire.
