Wild boar cull
Cull to restart in the Forest of Dean

Following a recent suspension, The Forestry Commission is to begin its annual cull of wild boar in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire, later this month.

They are hoping to shoot 100 by January, though there is debate over the number of wild boar within the boundaries of the forest, which could be anything from 200-600.

There had been a suspension earlier this year, over fears that the forest's boar could be wiped out, and the Forestry Commission recently agreed to raise their target population of 90 boar in the forest to 400.

"Last year we culled 150 and this year there are more animals about than that - so clearly doing nothing, giving their breeding dynamics, is not an option," said Ian Harvey of the Dean Forestry Commission.

"There are no natural predators and the reproductive capacity of wild boar is very high," he added. "A 50 percent reduction by emigration or humane control is needed to maintain numbers at a stable level."

Friends of the Wild Boar are a campaign group with "reservations" about the culls.

Member, Dave Slater, commented: "The natural die-off of boar, and the way they emigrate out of the forest, means that the population never really gets above 400 at any time."
