The search has begun for new homes and donations for food and toys.

Staff are working round the clock to care for two litters born in a week. 

An appeal has been launched after 24 puppies were born at an RSPCA centre in a single week.

The team at RSPCA Chesterfield and North Derbyshire is searching for new homes, donations and food for the pups, who are currently receiving round-the-clock care.

The litters were born to mums Susie and Kila, who gave birth just six days apart.

Kila, a five-year-old cane corso, arrived at the centre on 1 July after being rescued by officers who had no idea she was pregnant until she was taken for to the vets to be neutered. She gave birth to a huge litter of 14 pups on 3 August – the highest number the centre has ever seen.

Four-year-old Susie was rescued from a property in Barnsley, where she had been living with five other dogs. She gave birth to 10 puppies on 28 July at the Chesterfield centre.

Sadly, despite the staff’s best efforts, three of Susie’s pups and two of Kila’s pups passed away in the first few days. A further two of Kila’s pups are being hand-reared, which is keeping the team very busy.

Chloe Gee, from the branch, said: “Both Kila and Susie are so sweet. They’re such good mums and we’re supporting them as best we can, including the two who are being hand-reared.

“It’s been a really busy time but we’re so proud to have 19 beautiful, wiggly puppies who are becoming cheekier and funnier by the day.

“It’s still touch and go for the two hand-rears but we’re cautiously optimistic!
“However, looking after all of the pups has really taken its toll on the whole team and on our funds, so we’d be really grateful to anyone who can help as we nurture these gorgeous families.”
