An abandoned young pony is recovering with World Horse Welfare after suffering multiple injuries in a car accident.
The charity was called out after the pony, later named Arthur, was hit by a car in July 2026.
Police officers and a veterinary surgeon were called to the scene, where they successfully moved him out of the road. However, Arthur’s owner could not be identified.
Lorraine Holmes, yard supervisor at World Horse Welfare’s Hall Farm, said: “When we went out to rescue Arthur, it appeared that he’d had very little handling, but he has such a wonderful nature that I was able to get a headcollar on him. He loaded really well, which was amazing given what he’d just been through.”
As soon as he arrived, a veterinary surgeon came to examine his injuries – which included facial injuries and a ‘nasty’ wound to his hindquarters.
With Arthur distracted by pony nuts, the vet was able to thoroughly examine him. She also flushed the wound in his hindquarters to prevent it from becoming infected.
Since the weather was hot, it was decided that a fly mask would protect Arthur’s facial injuries and keep flies away. After he had settled in, the fly mask was gently introduced and he was soon comfortable in having the fly mask put on and taken off.
Despite an abandonment notice being left at the location he was found, no owners stepped forward to claim Arthur. He was taken into the charity’s care, and will eventually be rehomed.
Lorraine said: “He’s a really lovely character and has been a joy to work with ever since we first brought him in. His wounds have healed well and he’s come so far with his handling skills already. Now we’re waiting for some cooler weather so that he can be castrated as the next step in his rehabilitation journey.
“When he’s eventually ready to find a home of his own, whoever rehomes him is going to be getting a fabulous little pony.”
