Call for research on the animal welfare impacts of breeding
Projects can focus on conformation in companion animals, livestock or other species.
Grants of up to £100,000 available for projects that focus on conformation

The Animal Welfare Foundation (AWF) has launched a call for research as part of its work to improve understanding of the impacts of breeding on animal welfare.

Grants of up to £100,000 are available for projects that focus on conformation in companion animals, livestock or other species. The knowledge gathered will form part of the AWF's three-year project on 'breeding for better welfare'.

Applicants are invited to submit proposals for projects lasting between 18-24 months that consider the relevant welfare consequences highlighted by the AWF Delphi project on priority welfare issues in the UK.

The projects may also explore some of the breeding research gaps identified by BVA policy positions on extreme conformation and UK sustainable animal agriculture.

AWF chair Chris Laurence said: “Scientific research to find practical solutions to animal welfare issues is at the heart of AWF’s work, and we are delighted to be able to offer funding for new projects this year. We are looking for research proposals that will have a practical impact on the veterinary professions’ work, and wider policymaking, with the overall aim to ensure that animal welfare remains high on the agenda.”

The application process will remain open until 9 am on Wednesday, 16 June, with researchers being asked to submit overview proposals ahead of their full application. For more information, visit: animalwelfarefoundation.org.uk
