Practices across the UK are allowed to continue operating, albeit under different conditions based on national or regional restricitons.
Restrictions outlined for vets and practices in all four nations
The RCVS has updated it's guidance for veterinary professionals and practices, following the implementation of new lockdowns and Tier four restrictions across the UK.
After consultation with the UK's Chief Veterinary Officers (CVOs), the RCVS has been able to update and tailor it's guidance specifically to each nation. Changes have also been made to the College's flowcharts and FAQs.
In England, veterinary practices in areas under the new Tier four restrictions can remain open and owners will be able to leave home to seek 'essential' veterinary advice and treatment. Veterinary work essential to the supply of the food chain is also permitted. The RCVS states that veterinary practice support staff should work from home if possible.
Mainland Scotland will enter level four restrictions for a period of three weeks from 26 December and travel between England and Scotland will be restricted.
The Scottish CVO has confirmed that cross-border travel relating to animal welfare, including veterinary work, accessing animal supplies and travel to a vet, is allowed.
Veterinary practices in Scotland can remain open and do not have to restrict services, however they should continue to following COVID-19 business requirements on operating safely.
Wales entered a national lockdown with alert level four restrictions on 20 December. However, the Welsh CVO’s office has confirmed: "Veterinary services may continue to operate but non-essential sales of petcare products must cease, in line with suspension of non-essential retail. Services that are not necessary for the health and welfare of animals or for the production of food should be deferred.
"We expect vets to use their professional judgement and understanding of infection control to make sensible decisions to limit the risks of spreading COVID-19 whilst undertaking their work. We do need people to stay at home as much as possible in this alert level four."
From 26 December, Northern Ireland will be under a six-week lockdown. The NI Executive has confirmed that veterinary practices can remain open during this time and DAERA has stated that the new regulations do not appear to restrict the activities of veterinary professionals.
