What does the future hold for the RSPCA?

The RSPCA prosecutes around 80 per cent of cases relating to animal welfare law in England and Wales.

House of Commons debate looks at the Animal Welfare Act

Should the RSPCA lose its power to prosecute? Or, should it be given statutory powers? If the latter, what needs to change? These have been among key questions in the air as the Animal Welfare Act comes under scrutiny.

A series of animal welfare inquiries are being carried out by the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Efra) sub-committee. Part of this involves looking at the effectiveness of the Act.

The RSPCA prosecutes around 80 per cent of cases relating to animal welfare law in England and Wales. But in recent years it has faced criticism for some of its prosecutions, prompting debate about whether it should be allowed to continue.
