FVE and CPME renew memorandum of understanding

Antimicrobial resistance will be a key area for collaboration between doctors and vets, after the renewal of a memorandum of understanding between the Federation of Veterinarians of Europe (FVE) and the Standing Committee of European Doctors (CPME).

Ahead of the European Antibiotics Awareness Day, which will be held on 18 November, the memorandum sets out a co-operational framework for the two organisations, recognising the 'One Health' concept.

Antimicrobial resistance poses an increasing threat to public health and requires a joint response from the human and animal health sectors.

CPME president Dr Katrín Fjeldste said: "It is only by working together that we will win against antimicrobial resistance. The CPME-FVE Memorandum of Understanding, by identifying joint actions to be undertaken in this field, is part of this collaborative exercise."

The two organisations will also pledge to co-operate more closely on issues relating to professional regulation.

FVE president Dr Rafael Laguens explained: "We see that a lack of policy coherence undermines results. At professional level, we wish to set a good example of working across sectors to optimise policies and their benefits for public health."
