Blood cells have been dipped in acid as a rapid way of producing stem cells.

Findings could have implications for treatment of injury and disease

Scientists in Japan say they have been able to rapidly produce stem cells by dipping blood cells into acid.

The research represents a major breakthrough in the treatment of injury and disease.

Previously stem cells had been grown from embryos.

They are unique in that they can become part of any other cell and have the potential to help regenerate the body.

The latest findings have been published in the Nature journal.
