Unique Morrissey book rakes in thousands for PETA

Auction of signed autobiography bought for more than £8,000

A unique signed copy of Morrissey's autobiography has sold for a whopping £8,300 on eBay. The proceeds from the auction have been donated to animal rights charity, PETA.

The one-of-a-kind book is the only signed copy of the singer/songwriter's recently released hardback, titled Autobiography.

During his 26-year career as a solo artist, the former Smiths frontman has had three number one albums in England and 11 top 10 albums. His songs have been recorded by artists such as David Bowie, Thelma Houston and My Chemical Romance, amongst many others.

To add to his musical achievements, Morrissey was voted the second-greatest living British icon by BBC viewers, and in 2007 he was voted the “greatest northern male”, past or present, in a nationwide newspaper poll.

Throughout his music career, Morrissey has also been a well-known animal rights campaigner. He has starred in an number of PETA’s ad campaigns, and has recently joined PETA’s fight to pressure department store Fortnum and Mason to stop selling foie gras.

Morrissey also regularly screens footage of PETA US’ “Meet your meat” exposé during performances of The Smiths’ song, “Meat is Murder”. It therefore came as no surprise when he was named PETA’s Person of the Year in 2011.

"Animals in dire need of help have no better friend than Morrissey," says PETA's Mimi Bekhechi. "Whether it's cruelty to cows, chickens and pigs headed for the table, animals being made into boots and coats or other abuse, Morrissey speaks out forcefully. The proceeds from his signed autobiography add to the work of this true hero to animals."
