Nominations open for RCVS and VN Council elections
RCVS encourages candidates of all ages and experience levels to stand for election

Nominations are now open for the RCVS and VN Council elections 2014, and the RCVS is encouraging veterinary surgeons and veterinary nurses to consider putting their names forward.

Six seats are available on the RCVS Council, and two on the VN Council, all for a four-year period.

Existing RCVS Council members are due to retire next year, but all are eligible for re-election.

Current RCVS members are David Catlow, Jacqui Molyneux, Bob Partridge, Christine Shield, Neil Smith and Clare Tapsfield-Wright. Likewise, Suzanne May and Hilary Orpet are eligible for re-election onto the VN council.

The theme "People like you" has been chosen for two short videos produced by the RCVS, which aim to illustrate the role that council members play. The experiences of existing members and their reasons for standing are featured in the videos.

Last year, no women stood for election for the first time in more than a decade. The college says it is determined to widen participation this year.

RCVS Registrar, Gordon Hockey, said: "We need people of all ages and of varying experiences and professional backgrounds to ensure there is a healthy and diverse range of views available."

Nominations are open until 5pm on Friday, January 31, 2014, and details about how to stand in the elections are available here for the RCVS Council and here for the VN Council.

For anyone who is considering standing for election but wishes to find out more, the college will be hosting a "Meet the RCVS" day on Tuesday, December 10. For more information or to book a place, contact communications officer Fiona Harcourt on 0207 202 0773 or by email

The two RCVS videos can be viewed on Youtube.
