Pet food entrepreneur shortlisted for top award
Alexandra Tamasan.
Gap in the pet food delivery market results in multi-million pound turnover in two years

AN ENTREPRENEUR who started up a pet food delivery service has been announced as a finalist in the NatWest Everywoman Awards.

Alexandra Tamasan, 25, from Stratford-Upon-Avon has been chosen as a finalist in the Artemis category, for women running a business aged 25 and under.

After graduating, Alexandra was left without a job when an employment offer was withdrawn and her partner was made redundant at the same time. Seeing her partner's mother struggling to carry heavy bags of pet food, she came up with idea for PetShopBowl.co.uk

Alexandra set up the online business in 2010 from her studio apartment in London, with the help of a £5,000 Prince's Trust loan. To date, she has achieved sales of more than £2 million and is on track to turn over £3 million in 2013.

The company offers a "subscription" service for regular deliveries of food, toys, and so on, and free delivery on orders above £19.99. She has a customer base of 40,000 and has grown her Facebook page for the brand to 60,000 fans, running regular offers to attract new customers.

Commenting on this year’s awards, everywoman co-founder Maxine Benson, MBE said: “Now is the time to shrug off the spectre of recession and celebrate individuals who are contributing to economic recovery through their vision and success.

"This year’s finalists unilaterally saw the opportunity for growth and have proven the UK is enterprise-friendly and open for business. Women-led SMEs already contribute £70 billion to the economy.  With an estimated 2.4m women not in work who want to work, if we could just equalise men and women’s economic participation we could add 10% to the economy by 2030.

"It is vital, therefore, that we foster entrepreneurial culture to ensure the UK economy continues its recovery and its ability to compete on a global scale.”

Alexandra is up against two other women in her category, and the winners of the five categories will be announced on December 4 at a lunch ceremony at London’s Dorchester Hotel. The ceremony will be attended by successful women in business and will be compered by acclaimed newsreader Mary Nightingale.
