Applications open for Target Grants
Nick Royle, RCVS

RCVS Knowledge aims to address challenges in EVBM

Applications are now open for the "Target Grants" funding scheme, created by RCVS Knowledge to address certain challenges in evidence-based veterinary medicine (EBVM) by appealing for solutions from the global veterinary community.

Having funded veterinary research for the past 50 years, RCVS Knowledge recently developed a new focus of supporting EBVM across the globe. It is now inviting applications for its first "Target Grants" round under this new agenda.

Nick Royle, executive director of RCVS Knowledge, explains: "The first of these Target Grants examines what the normal first opinion veterinary practice caseload globally looks like today."

"We have analysed the literature and found that, even though veterinary epidemiology is a frequently published topic, it tends to focus on the prevalence of one particular disease or medical problem. Very few studies have concentrated on defining the veterinary caseload across the board, using real practice data.

"This creates the risk that knowledge gaps in veterinary medicine may not be prioritised. As a result, research and teaching curricula may not be correctly focused."

Using these research findings, RCVS Knowledge hopes to be able to target and prioritise its research efforts and answer the most commonly arising questions in practice.

Nine grants of £5,000 are available for applicants to cover different types of veterinary practice worldwide. RCVS Knowledge says anyone can apply for funding, and may bid for one or more projects.

The application process is open until November 15, 2013. Click here for full application criteria.
