Edinburgh among top 20 universities
Research funding also reaches all-time high

The University of Edinburgh has announced record levels of research funding, the same day that it was revealed to have moved into the international league table's top 20 best universities in the world.

Strengthening its position as a world-leading research institution, Edinburgh University secured £300 million in competitive research grants for 2012/13 – the highest level of investment it has ever seen.

The figure is 20 per cent higher than the £250 million the research institution secured in 2011/12, allowing study into a range of disciplines, including medicine, veterinary medicine and science.

In the same day the figures were released, the university discovered it had moved up four places to 17th in the 2013/14 QS World University Rankings.

"The news about our research funding figures, and our continued rise in various world league tables, is very welcome and reflects the quality, hard work and dedication of our staff and students as well as the highly strategic support we receive from the Scottish Government," said Professor Sir Timothy O'Shea, the university's principal.

"With such support, the university can go on producing world-leading research which has the potential to change people's lives for the better."

Meanwhile, Michael Russell MSP, cabinet secretary for education, commented: "We are delighted to see the University of Edinburgh rise to 17th place in the QS World University rankings… [which] reflects the exceptional commitment of staff and students at the university."
