Veterinary Surgeon — Houghton le Spring (near Durham)

Simply Cats (www.simplycats.net) is a rapidly growing, independently owned, feline-only clinic located just outside the beautiful historic city of Durham. We are well-equipped and have a fabulous clientele base from all across the North East.

We pride ourselves on having the highest level of feline expertise to deliver the best possible care to our patients and their families. We are consistent holders of the ISFM Gold Standard Care Certificate, and our clinical and ancillary teams provide feline-focused care, including our stress-free handling. We make sure every visit to our practice is as smooth and stress-free as possible.

Working with us, you will be part of a great team providing services from health checks and vaccinations to a wide range of complex medical cases, dentistry and surgery. We have our own on-site dental X-ray equipment and are one of the leading practices in the North East for dental surgery.

We work closely with our local 24-hour emergency and specialist centres to provide the best outcome for our patients and clients. We are also partnered with VVS, Virtual Veterinary Specialist, to be able to deliver specialist on-site ultrasonography to ensure our clients remain at a feline-only centre as much as possible and enhance our practitioners level of clinical ability.

We aim to be at the forefront of feline medicine, from providing high quality medicine through our partnerships with specialists in the area to small changes within practice protocols e.g. the recent introduction of Home Safe thermochips.

We aim to provide a friendly, cohesive, and flexible work environment, with a focus on maintaining our gold-standard veterinary care, while at the same time looking after the health and wellbeing of our team. You will be just as important to us as our patients.

About you:

  • A team player with a love of cats who thrives in all aspects of feline medicine, surgery and healthcare
  • Excellent attention to detail, with a strong focus on optimising treatment outcomes through thoughtful case management and communication with clients and our team
  • Open to constructive feedback and able to work harmoniously within a close-knit team.

The role:

  • Our clinic opening hours are currently 08:30-18:30, with no weekend work – although we may in future restart Saturday mornings for consults only. There are no out of hours or emergency callouts
  • We have an in-house hospitalisation area for in-patients who need to stay overnight but this is managed on a rotational basis and just for once-a-night observations.

Benefits include:

  • Fully paid RCVS and VDS fees
  • CPD allowance up to £1,500 and five days per year dependent on relevancy
  • Competitive salary based on experience
  • Five weeks' holiday entitlement per year
  • Generous pet discount scheme.

  • VMD responds to Solensia injection concerns
Blog SpotThe VMD has added anaphylaxis to the SPC of Solensia 7 mg/ml Solution for Injection for Cats.

It says that this is a rare side effect, with such adverse events affecting fewer than three animals for every 1000 doses of Solensia sold.

Solensia is used to alleviate osteoarthritis pain in cats. It contains the active ingredient frunevetmab.

Anaphylaxis joins effects such as alopecia, dermatitis, pruritus on the list of adverse effects.

The VMD says that is constantly reviewing adverse event data for all medicines.
