Former BSAVA president Derek Tavernor dies
Derek Tavernor was president of the BSAVA from 1970-1971.
BSAVA and colleagues pay tribute to 'man of action'

The BSAVA has paid tribute to past president Derek Tavernor who has died at the age of 88.

William Derek Tavernor graduated from the University of Liverpool and was later awarded a PhD. Following two years in general practice, he worked in the virology department of Messrs Glaxo before moving on to become a lecturer at the RVC.

Derek became president of the BSAVA in 1970 and in that same year took up an appointment with the Home Office. Before becoming president, he chaired a number of BSAVA committees, later becoming president of the BVA and serving on the RCVS Council.

Derek and his wife Susan were parents to three children, one of whom, Angela, followed in her father’s footsteps into the veterinary profession.

Colleague Peter Bedford said that Derek was a ‘man of action’ who gave the impression that he always knew where he was going and how to get there.

The BSAVA said in a statement: ‘[Derek] will be missed by his many colleagues and acquaintances from the veterinary world, and our sympathies are with his family and friends.”
