A vet nurse's diary: Caring for patients in kennels

vet nurse in kennels
First thing this morning I cleaned out all the hospital patients, made sure they had their medication and walked a dog staying overnight due to pancreatitis. We also had two other hospital patients; a cat that had been involved in a road traffic accident and another cat that boards with us occasionally as it needs to have its bladder expressed daily.

Twelve other patients were booked in for surgery so temperature, pulse and respiration checks were carried out on all patients ready for the vet's arrival.

I spent most of the morning checking and walking patients and contacting owners to update them on their pets' progress and arranging times for them to be collected.

The operations were mainly routine, including castrates, spays and a few dentals, however we also had a springer spaniel in for sedation to remove a grass seed from its ear, and another dog booked in for general anaesthetic to explore facial swelling.

In the afternoon I was busy with discharging patients and cleaning kennels. At the end of the day I handed the hospital patients over to the duty nurse.
