Surgical Skills for Nurses

Course Outline:
Do you want to get more ‘hands-on’ with surgery in your practice? Would you like to help work through a busy ops list? Schedule 3 of The Veterinary Surgeons Act allows Nurses to carry out minor surgical procedures under the supervision of a veterinary surgeon. Veterinary nurses are increasingly taking on these cases, utilising their knowledge and skills, whilst increasing their job satisfaction. The course aims to outline the necessary skills required to competently carry out some common procedures via the use of lectures and practical sessions.

What you’ll learn:

  • How to prepare a patient for surgery
  • Which instruments and suture materials to use
  • How to cope with traumatic wounds and ‘stitch ups’
  • How to perform lump removals
  • Biopsy techniques – FNA, needle core and skin punch
  • How to use surgical drains
  • How to manage specific presentations – abscesses, aural haematoma and tail amputation

Tutor:
Paul Aldridge BVSc, CertSAS, MRCVS

Date/Venue:
5th July in Studley, Warwickshire
