Triage and First Aid



Course Outline
Being proficient in the art of triage is essential for you as a veterinary nurse. Emergency patients can present at any time so it is vital that you are both confident and competent in dealing with them promptly and effectively. This course will give you a step-by-step approach to the assessment and stabilisation of these patients. It will include assessment of major organ systems and specific conditions that you’re likely to encounter including: gastric dilatation and volvulus, dyspnoeic patients and head trauma patients. It will also include a practical CPR session including the use of mannequins.


What you’ll learn:

  • How to effectively triage and assess emergency patients
  • How to deal with emergency presentations including gastric dilatation and volvulus and head trauma
  • Do I believe this FeLV test result?
  • When should I use interferons in my patients?
  • Skinny cats – hyperthyroidism or chronic renal failure?... or something else?
  • How to perform effective CPR based on the current RECOVER guidelines
