Nursing the Orthopaedic Patient
From Admission to Discharge

Course Outline:
Orthopaedic nursing is one of the most commonly required services in both first opinion and referral practice, especially after road traffic accidents. This course will discuss your role in some of the commonly seen orthopaedic surgeries. It will go through what you need to know in theatre, what analgesia options are suitable and what you can do to make recovery and rehabilitation as trouble free as possible for both patient and owner. At the end of the day you'll understand the choice of surgical option, how hands on nursing really can make the difference and why nursing orthopaedic patients successfully really relies on a whole 'team' effort.

What you'll learn:

  • Comparing common orthopaedic surgical procedures – understanding the vet's choice
  • Analgesia - pre, peri and post operative pain management
  • Fracture repair - classification, ASIF principles
  • Trauma and RTA patients - including open fracture management and nursing
  • Nursing for recovery and rehabilitation
  • Post-operative nursing - including nutritional support

Course tutor:
Alison Young DipAVN (Surg) RVN

Date/Venue:
31st May in Studley, Warwickshire
